Pattern cutting underpins the whole of the clothing industry. Its as simple as no pattern, no production. I have no 'cool' pictures to show you, just the promise that pattern cutting and grading are skills worth developing and will give you the edge. For books to accompany the courses visit DigitalPatternCutting.com
Pattern cutting is such a hidden activity /trade /skill /call it what you will, but is vital to the manufacture of clothes. It is the blue print, the template, the starting point, be it card or digital or contained within the hands of the bespoke tailor. And if the pattern is well thought through, perfectly executed and clear, the rest of the production process flows well. My delight then to discover a podcast blog all about pattern making.  Caroline and her co-blogger Kathryn open up the conversation to demystify and encourage pattern cutting with humour and insight. Of course I am a fan of anyone championing the cause and recommend them to you.   Keep well everyone, Maggie

Into the factory

How will your pattern be used? Who will cut and sew it and with what machinery? Pattern cutting doesn't end with the styling pattern pieces, that's just half the story. And the story is exciting, taking you into a world of manufacture that is vary varied in its resources, people, and methods of garment making. I loved factory life, garments came to life there. I learned from skilled men and women who shared their expertise and experience with the young me. Of course not all factories live up to expected standards, but those that I both worked in and visited for CMT work were places that informed and refined my pattern making. I did a few months as a machinist making Lee Cooper jackets which was a real eye opener.  Another stint in a studio that made to order, and that had another set of requirements. The speed, the organization, a tinny tranny blaring out Radio 1. Seeing the actual way in which say belt loops were made, not by my pattern piece but by the meter from the cloth selvedge made me understand the role of the pattern specification and my responsibility in making that pattern a proper working document. WorkBook 2 helps you transform your pattern into that working document.
